I wasn't crazy about this one at first, but it's grown on me a bit. I still think there are some cliche/very common medical drama things they pulled out very early, like patients refusing treatment on religious grounds and doctors hooking up. But I like Charlie's interaction with Cal and the flashback.
I also like the introduction of Dawn. While she pulls the 'Charlie would rather die' card too early, you can still tell she cares about him and wants to try everything to help him. The partial Charlie/Dawn shipper in me wants him to bring up hearing the song she played for him. One of the few times he was connected with his body.
